Get the Scoop on Life Near Downtown Houston

Are you looking at apartments near Downtown Houston? If so, it’s a smart move, because this neighborhood is hot! It has a thriving dining scene, plenty of options for shopping, arts and culture, expansive green spaces, and entertainment and sports venues. With its network of pedestrian tunnels and skywalks as well as a decent light rail and bus system, it’s easy to get around, too. A thriving business district and a thriving commercial and hospitality industry means Downtown Houston is hopping during business hours as well as well into the evening. Here are just a few highlights of living near this neighborhood.

The Alley Theatre

The Alley Theatre was founded more than 60 years ago as Houston’s premier theatre company. If offers a wide variety of productions, including up-and-coming plays, classic dramas and comedies, the re-discovered, and even the unknown. It has two separate theaters on site: the Neuhaus, which is an intimate 310-seater, and the Hubbard, which is the main stage, holding 774 people. The Alley Theatre was honored with a Regional Theatre Tony Award in 1996 for the strength of the performances staged here.

Discovery Green

At about 12 acres in size, Discovery Green is known to locals as one of the best outdoor gathering spots. It’s right in Downtown Houston, near the George R. Brown Convention Center, major hotels, and the sports arenas. Since opening in 2008, Houstonians have dubbed it “Downtown’s New Backyard,” and it’s easy to see why. In the grassy area, you can find two restaurants, a kids’ play area, a man-made lake, two dog runs, a multi-use amphitheater, and an event lawn. It also hosts regular events, like family yoga in the park during the summer. Discovery Green boasts a gold rating from the LEED Green Building rating system, which is the national benchmark for the design, construction, and operations of high-performance green buildings. When you’re considering apartments in Downtown Houston, your proximity to Discovery Green should be taken into account!

GreenStreet

Not far from Discovery Green is GreenStreet, a 570,000-square-foot space that houses restaurants, offices, entertainment venues, and retail stores. Stretching along three city blocks, GreenStreet offers plenty of dining options, including McCormick and Schmick’s, Mia Bella Trattoria, House of Blues Restaurant and Bar, and III Forks, and many have outdoor seating areas. Stock up on new clothes at BCBGMAXAZRIA and Forever 21, and plan a weekend night at Lucky Strike or Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar. Not only that, live entertainment is presented on certain nights in the outdoor areas at GreenStreet.

Toyota Center

Toyota Center opened in October of 2003 and has been part of the bustling Downtown Houston life since then, setting a new standard for sports and live entertainment. At 750,000 square feet, it spans more than six city blocks and is home to both the NBA’s Houston Rockets. The 18,055-seat Toyota Center also hosts major concerts and touring shows. In its first year, brought in over 1.5 million people!
