Memorial Heights is a hub for antique shops and bungalows, but also for great eateries. If you are looking to dine on a budget, it doesn’t mean that you cannot indulge your taste buds in some tried-and-true affordable dining. Here is a list of the five best restaurants in Memorial Heights that won’t burn a hole in your wallet.

#5: Asia Market

Asia Market may technically be a half a block out of The Heights, but it still deserves a spot on this list for its consistently cheap and exquisite cuisine. If you want a taste of authenticity with reliably low prices, then Asia Market will deliver. The market arguably has the best Thai food in all of Houston, with such dishes as the Kang Massam curry and the Som Tum green papaya salad. To get the most from your dining experience, be aware that most dishes are "firecracker" spicy.

#4: Jus’ Mac

For mac-and-cheese lovers, Jus’ Mac is a haven. This extremely cheap restaurant will charge you as little as $4.75, and the Frito-layered Chili Cheese Mac has made it on favorite dishes lists for years. If chip layered soul food doesn’t sound appealing, then there are a plethora of other intriguing and delicious mac-and-cheese dishes. Try your hand at the Tikka with pepper jack cheese and spicy chicken masala, or the Homerun with all-beef hot dog and Colby jack stuffing. If mac-and-cheese is not your thing, then perhaps a loaded Panini or large salad will do the trick.

#3: Hickory Hallow

Down-home southern cooking is comfort food that’s hard to beat. If you are feeling a craving for some buttery, rich dishes that won’t break your budget, Hickory Hallow is your perfect solution. This hole-in-the-wall eatery is a local favorite, and is famous for its enormous portions of chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes dribbled with cream gravy. All of Hickory Hallow’s dishes go great with sweet tea poured into a Mason jar.

#2: Les Givral’s Kahve

This delightful French-Vietnamese restaurant resides at the bottom of a development situated on Washington Avenue. It is a must-visit for those who want to indulge in fusion cuisine while dining on a budget in Memorial Heights. Les Givral’s Kahve is the ideal spot to go to for lunch, dinner, or even a late night snack. Try the Bahn-mi sandwiches, vermicelli bowls, and spring rolls for a mouth-watering experience. This is also a great place to get a cheap drink at the futuristic-looking bar situated at the front of the restaurant.

#1: Esther’s Cajun Café and Soul Food

A soul food restaurant is meant to have a steam table. And if it doesn’t, it is arguably not authentic. Luckily, Esther’s Cajun Café and Soul Food delivers on this front. Esther’s has a slew of southern favorites like smothered pork chops, collard greens, and oxtail. Try a classic New Orleans’ dish like crawfish etouffee or gumbo. Although the bigger plates are a bit pricier, you can easily fill up on less than $10 with smaller special dishes and individual entrees. Try Esther’s famous chocolate cake after your meal for a truly memorable dessert.
